Hi all. I'm just mulling over whether I should try to come off HRT but wondering whether changing my hormone levels would have a bad effect on the RA and exacerbate some of the other drug side effects. I've been on HRT for several years now as had really bad menopause problems, and was diagnosed with RA well after I'd started on HRT. So I have always taken my RA drugs on top, and although things not perfect the MTX & Plaquenil mix seems to be having positive effect and am not too bad. But what might happen if I stop HRT? I'm scared of rocking the boat that's sort of sailing along ok - but then there is a risk with HRT and I'm keen to minimise my drug intake. Has anyone done this and if so, what happened eg to your energy levels? Everyone seems to say that being pregnant helps supress RA and although HRT is totally different (!) I'm wondering whether it also has a positive effect? Any views? Polly

Hi Polly - you may find the web site www.familydoctor.co.uk/node/508 useful for information. It doesn't specifically mention RA but it does provide a good guide as to the pros and cons of taking HRT in general.

Sorry Polly. I am afraid I can't help you but Jean's advice sounds very good. Hope you sort out your problem.

be carefull about stopping any meds too quickly, i myself did not take hrt as my sister was on it 15yr + and suffered badly when she came off,she is on meds herself the advise she got was to wean off the hrt and her surgery kept a very close eye on her as she has not got the best of health anyway,i controled my time with diet and exercised and alot of showers, talk in depth to doctors etc and as jean says read as much info as pos,my sister is fine but it did take her time to come off the drug.remember we all react different, good luck.dorothy

I was on HRT for 13 yrs. and yes had to come off them gradually. I came off the HRT before
I was diagnosed with the old RA.

Unfort for me I still get hot flushes approx 6+ a day. They are not nice either.
